Today the Province of BC announced that beginning July 6:
- day-time closures will cease and single lane alternating traffic will take place
- nightly closures will occur from 8:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. (except Saturday nights)
- any changes to night-time closure windows will be scheduled at least two weeks in advance
- see media release: https://news.gov.bc.ca/releases/2021TRAN0093-001220
Please advise your arriving guests to be in Port Alberni by 6:00 p.m. This will provide them with sufficient time, plus a buffer, to get to Tofino prior to the nightly road closure.

Hello!
Just my thoughts on the new closure. I think a 10pm-4am closure would be more appropriate, as 8pm in the middle of the summer is still a very commonly time use for travelling. People leaving from the mainland, or if locals want to get out of town after work, or need to go across island for the day, it limits our travels a lot. I think pushing the closure a couple hours would be much better, as there is not much going on between 10pm-4am but I think that between 8pm-10pm there is still a lot of people travelling, that had a long day and just want to get to town. A nightly road closure will make people rushed to make it to Tofino because they simply won’t be able to find their bed if they can’t make it and I think that could be dangerous.
Personally, I travel south island quite often, and without taking my time, I usually make it home by 8-9pm so I would appreciate a later closure time.
Thanks a lot!
Lydia
